DIN, ISO & ASME Washer Standards: Cross-Reference & Equivalents
When a drawing calls for DIN 125 and your supplier quotes ISO 7089, or when a US procurement team requests ASME USS washers for a metric bolted joint, the instinct is to assume these are interchangeable. Sometimes they are; often they are not. This guide maps the major washer standard families — DIN, ISO, ASME/USS/SAE, GB and JIS — so you can read a specification, identify the correct equivalent, and avoid the most common cross-system ordering mistakes.
1. The standard families and where they are used
DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung)
German national standards, still the dominant trade language for metric washers worldwide. Most global suppliers — including those in China — produce to DIN numbers even when the identical part could equally be called out by its ISO equivalent. DIN standards are metric (M-sizes). The prefix "DIN" followed by a number (e.g. DIN 125, DIN 9021, DIN 127) is universally understood in purchasing and on drawings. Many DIN standards have been superseded or harmonised into ISO counterparts, but the DIN number persists on drawings and in trade catalogs.
ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
The international metric standard family. ISO washer standards (ISO 7089, ISO 7090, ISO 7092, ISO 7093) are dimensionally aligned with their DIN counterparts. In practice the DIN and ISO numbers are frequently cited interchangeably for flat washers; dimensions are the same and a part meeting DIN 125 Form A also meets ISO 7089. ISO is the correct reference for new international drawings and for procurement where a supplier-neutral specification is required.
ASME B18.21.1 — USS and SAE (United States)
The American standard for plain and lock washers. Critical distinction: ASME B18.21.1 is an inch standard. Washers are sized by nominal bolt size expressed in fractional inches — 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and so on — and all dimensions (bore, OD, thickness) are in inches. There is no 1:1 metric equivalent: an M8 metric washer and a 5/16" inch washer both fit approximately 8 mm bolts, but their bores, ODs and thicknesses differ and they are not interchangeable without checking every dimension.
Within ASME B18.21.1, two series cover plain (flat) washers:
- SAE series (narrow) — smaller outer diameter, lighter pattern. Used where a compact footprint is acceptable.
- USS series (wide) — larger outer diameter, more bearing surface. Closer in spirit to a fender washer; used where load distribution across a larger area is needed.
Always specify both the bolt size in inches and the series (SAE or USS) when ordering to ASME B18.21.1.
GB (Guobiao — Chinese national standards)
China's national standards for washers (under the GB/T series) are metrically based and dimensionally close to the equivalent DIN standards. GB/T 97.1 (regular flat washer) aligns closely with DIN 125; GB/T 96 (large washer) with DIN 9021; GB/T 848 (small washer) with DIN 433. Differences in tolerances and hardness requirements exist, so "≈" rather than "=" is the correct notation. HUIHUI produces to DIN/ISO specifications as the export standard; GB/T applies to domestic Chinese supply chains.
JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards)
Japan's industrial standards body. JIS B 1256 covers plain (flat) washers for metric fasteners. JIS washers are metric but have their own dimension series and tolerances distinct from DIN/ISO. Because JIS washer dimensions are not a straightforward copy of DIN, this guide does not present JIS equivalents as direct substitutes; if you need to meet JIS B 1256, specify it explicitly and confirm the dimension table with your supplier.
2. Flat washer cross-reference table
The table below maps the most common flat washer types across DIN, ISO, and related standards. The DIN↔ISO pairings in the first column are direct dimensional equivalents. GB/T equivalents are close but not identical (marked "≈"). ASME inch series are listed separately as a reminder that they are not metric equivalents.

Note on spring washers: The ISO standard for split spring lock washers was withdrawn. DIN 127 remains the reference specification used in trade globally. When ordering spring washers against an ISO number, confirm your supplier is running to DIN 127.
3. DIN 125 vs ISO 7089 vs ISO 7090 — the detail
DIN 125 defines two forms. Form A is the plain flat washer; its nominal dimensions are identical to ISO 7089 (which specifies the 200 HV hardness class). Form B adds a chamfer on one face and corresponds to ISO 7090. For the vast majority of general bolted joints, Form A / ISO 7089 is correct.
If a drawing specifies ISO 7089, a DIN 125 Form A washer from a producer working to both standards satisfies the requirement. 4. DIN 9021 and ISO 7093 — the large-OD equivalent
DIN 9021 (the fender or large-OD washer) is dimensionally equivalent to ISO 7093. The outer diameter is approximately 3× the nominal bolt size — significantly wider than the standard DIN 125 pattern (2–2.5×). Use DIN 9021 / ISO 7093 wherever the clearance hole is larger than standard, the substrate is soft or compressible, or load needs to be distributed over a greater area. 5. DIN 433 and ISO 7092 — the small-OD equivalent
DIN 433 (small-OD washer) corresponds to ISO 7092. The outer diameter is smaller than DIN 125 — roughly 1.7–2× the bolt — making it suitable where the head or nut sits in a counterbore, or where a compact washer is needed to clear adjacent geometry. 6. Why ASME B18.21.1 is not a metric equivalent
This is the most consequential cross-system confusion in washer procurement. Consider M10 versus 3/8" as an example. The nominal bolt diameter for M10 is 10 mm; 3/8" is 9.525 mm — close but not the same. The bore, OD and thickness specified by DIN 125 for M10 and by ASME B18.21.1 SAE for 3/8" are both derived from their respective nominal sizes, and the resulting dimensions differ. Installing an ASME SAE washer onto an M10 bolt — or specifying DIN 125 M10 when the drawing calls for 3/8" SAE — is a specification error.
The rule is straightforward: if the bolt is metric (M-size), the washer must be specified to a metric standard (DIN or ISO). If the bolt is inch (fractional size), the washer must be specified to ASME B18.21.1 with the correct inch size and series. Metric bolt → metric washer (DIN / ISO). Inch bolt → inch washer (ASME B18.21.1 SAE or USS). Mixing systems requires a full dimensional check — never rely on nominal bolt size alone as a proxy for interchangeability.
7. How to avoid ordering errors when working across standards
- Identify the bolt standard first. Is it metric (M-series) or inch (fractional)? That determines which washer standard family applies.
- State the standard, not just the size. "M8 washer" is ambiguous — DIN 125, DIN 9021 and DIN 433 all fit M8 bolts but have very different ODs. "DIN 125 Form A M8" is unambiguous.
- Check the OD pattern — standard, large or small. Confirm whether DIN 125 (standard), DIN 9021 (large) or DIN 433 (small) is correct for the clearance hole and bearing surface in your assembly.
- For ASME orders, specify SAE or USS. The nominal bolt size alone is insufficient. A 1/2" SAE washer and a 1/2" USS washer have different ODs and thicknesses.
- Request an MTC when mixing supply origins. If you source washers from multiple vendors or regions, an MTC (EN 10204 3.1) with explicit standard reference confirms that the supplied part was actually produced to the stated specification.
- Treat GB/T as "close but verify." If your drawing calls for DIN and you receive a part made to GB/T, the dimensions are likely within tolerance for most applications — but the tolerances and hardness requirements differ. For critical joints, request DIN/ISO certification explicitly.

FAQ
Are DIN 125 and ISO 7089 the same washer?
For most practical purposes, yes. DIN 125 Form A (plain face) and ISO 7089 specify the same nominal dimensions — the same inner bore, outer diameter and thickness for each M-size. ISO 7089 specifies the 200 HV hardness class; ISO 7090 is the same geometry with an additional chamfer on one face (equivalent to DIN 125 Form B). If a drawing calls for ISO 7089, a DIN 125 Form A washer from a competent manufacturer satisfies the requirement. HUIHUI production meets both standards.
Can I use a metric DIN washer in place of an ASME USS or SAE washer?
No — not as a direct substitution. ASME B18.21.1 is an inch standard. Washers are sized to bolt sizes expressed in fractional inches (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", etc.) with inner and outer diameters in inches. An M8 metric washer and a 5/16" inch washer are both for approximately 8 mm bolts, but the bore, OD and thickness differ and the two are not interchangeable without checking every dimension. If you need inch washers, order to ASME B18.21.1 with the bolt size in inches and the SAE or USS series specified.
What is the difference between SAE and USS washers under ASME B18.21.1?
Both are covered by ASME B18.21.1. SAE (narrow series) has a smaller outer diameter and is the tighter, lighter pattern — used where a compact footprint is acceptable. USS (wide series) has a larger outer diameter, closer in spirit to a fender washer, and is used where more bearing surface is needed. When ordering, specify both the bolt size (e.g. 1/2") and the series (SAE or USS) explicitly.
Why is there no ISO standard for spring lock washers?
ISO did publish a spring washer standard, but it was subsequently withdrawn. The trade continues to order split spring lock washers to DIN 127, which remains the dominant specification. When a drawing or purchase order calls for a spring washer by ISO number, confirm with the supplier whether production runs to DIN 127 — in practice, that is what will be supplied and what is in stock globally.
